C2 Proficiency Multiple Choice Reading Practice

C2 Proficiency (CPE) · Reading & Use of English Part 5 · 42 free exercises

A long text followed by four-option questions testing detail, opinion, attitude, implication and reference. The questions follow the order of the text, and every answer must be justified by what the text actually says — not what seems plausible.

Multiple Choice Reading: The answer is in the text, not in your opinion.

Careful reading of detail, opinion and implication — and resisting options that are true in the world but not stated in the text. Every correct answer can be proven from the words on the page.

What real learners get wrong: C2 learners average 69% — the dense texts and fine distinctions make this a real test. Prove every answer from the exact words on the page.

The method

  1. Read the whole text once before the questions, for argument and attitude.
  2. Take the questions in order — they follow the text.
  3. Answer in your own words before reading the options.
  4. Prove it from the text — underline the exact words that support your answer.
  5. Kill the three distractors by naming why each is wrong.
