B2 First Multiple Choice Reading Practice
B2 First (FCE) · Reading & Use of English Part 5 · 29 free exercises
A long text followed by four-option questions testing detail, opinion, attitude, implication and reference. The questions follow the order of the text, and every answer must be justified by what the text actually says — not what seems plausible.
Multiple Choice Reading: The answer is in the text, not in your opinion.
- 6 — questions
- 4 options — each
- 2 marks — per question
- One text — questions in order
Careful reading of detail, opinion and implication — and resisting options that are true in the world but not stated in the text. Every correct answer can be proven from the words on the page.
What real learners get wrong: B2 learners average 87% here. The errors cluster on attitude questions and reference questions — both beaten by pointing to the exact words in the text.
The method
- Read the whole text once before the questions, for argument and attitude.
- Take the questions in order — they follow the text.
- Answer in your own words before reading the options.
- Prove it from the text — underline the exact words that support your answer.
- Kill the three distractors by naming why each is wrong.
The traps
- True, but not in the text: A reasonable fact or opinion the text never actually states. Only what is on the page counts.
- Right words, wrong meaning: The option repeats words from the text but twists what they say.
- Half right: The first half matches the text; the second half adds something false.
- Too extreme: The text says "some" or "often"; the option says "all" or "always".
- Your opinion, not the writer’s: Attitude questions ask what the writer thinks, not what is sensible.
