C1 Advanced Listening Multiple Choice (Interview) Practice
C1 Advanced (CAE) · Listening Part 3 · 20 free exercises
A longer interview or discussion with multiple-choice questions testing opinion, attitude, agreement and detail. Speakers develop and qualify their views — the answer reflects their considered position, not the first thing they say.
Listening Multiple Choice (Interview): The opinion behind the words.
- ~4 min — interview
- 4 options — per question
- Heard twice — each recording
- Attitude — and opinion
Following a long spoken argument and identifying what a speaker actually thinks — their opinion, reason or feeling — through natural, winding speech. The answer is rarely the option that simply repeats what was said.
What real learners get wrong: C1 learners average 83%. The errors are subtle: choosing an option because it was mentioned, or answering on the speaker’s first comment rather than their conclusion.
The method
- Read the questions in order — they follow the interview.
- Underline what each question really asks: an opinion? a reason? a change of mind?
- Wait for the conclusion, not the mention — speakers often raise every option before settling.
- Listen for opinion signals ("what really matters is", "I used to think … but now").
- Use both plays: choose on the first, confirm on the second.
The traps
- Mention is not choice: Every option may be named — the answer is what the speaker concludes, not what they touch on.
- Answering too early: The first relevant thing you hear is often a view the speaker then rejects.
- Which speaker?: In a discussion, check whose opinion the question wants — speakers may disagree.
- Paraphrased answers: The correct option rephrases what was said; an exact-words option is suspect.
