For questions 1–8, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap. There is an example at the beginning.
Most of us like to think we are good listeners, but how often do we really give our full attention (0) ___ the person who is speaking? All too often, we are busy planning what to say next instead (1) ___ following what is being said. Sometimes we even interrupt (2) ___ order to share a similar story of our own. Good listeners behave quite differently. They put their phones away and look the speaker (3) ___ the eye. They ask questions, which shows that they are genuinely interested (4) ___ the answers. And when someone is upset, they do not rush to give advice, because often that person simply needs somebody to share their feelings (5) ___ . Listening well is a skill (6) ___ , like any other, can be improved with practice. Next time you chat with a friend, try to say as little (7) ___ possible and let them do most of the talking. You may notice things about them (8) ___ you had never realised before.
