The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.

Two schematic maps of the same town centre, one above the other, each with a compass rose showing north at the top. FIRST MAP, titled 'Islip town centre now': a straight main road runs east to west through the middle of the area. A row of shops lies along the north side of the main road, and a second row of shops along the south side. Beyond the northern shops, across the top of the map, is open countryside. South of the southern shops is housing, and further south again more housing. A park occupies the south-east corner, east of the housing. A school sits in the south-west, reached by a road that curves south off the main road. SECOND MAP, titled 'Islip town centre: planned development': the same area after redevelopment. A new ring road, drawn as a dashed loop, encircles the whole town centre. The former main road through the middle has become a pedestrians-only street. Along its north side, where the northern row of shops and the countryside were, there are now four new facilities in a row from west to east: a bus station, a shopping centre, a car park, and new housing. The southern row of shops remains unchanged. The housing south of it remains, with an additional area of new housing beside it, and the park is unchanged in the south-east. The school in the south-west remains, now just outside the ring road. A dual carriageway approaches the ring road from the west. The countryside north of the centre has been built on.
