The charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in six areas of the world.

Six pie charts, one for each region, each divided into three uses that sum to 100%: Industrial use, Agricultural use and Domestic use. North America — Industrial 48%, Agricultural 39%, Domestic 13%. South America — Industrial 10%, Agricultural 71%, Domestic 19%. Europe — Industrial 53%, Agricultural 32%, Domestic 15%. Africa — Industrial 7%, Agricultural 84%, Domestic 9%. Central Asia — Industrial 5%, Agricultural 88%, Domestic 7%. South East Asia — Industrial 12%, Agricultural 81%, Domestic 7%. Key features: North America and Europe are dominated by industrial use (48% and 53%), while South America, Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia are dominated by agricultural use (71% to 88%). Domestic use is a small share everywhere, ranging from 7% in Central Asia and South East Asia to 19% in South America. In Africa and Central Asia industrial use is the smallest category of the three, below even domestic use.
